Bourne Community College is a mixed comprehensive Trust school for students aged eleven to sixteen and is situated on the border of West Sussex and Hampshire, with the beautiful South Downs and surrounding villages to the north and the coastal waters of Chichester Harbour to the south.
Within the College we have a strong focus on high quality teaching and learning, supported by excellent staff development and an active student voice group. We believe that the very best learning takes place when students and adults work together in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. We, of course, have very high expectations for our students’ behaviour and they in turn can have equally high expectations for the quality of their lessons.
The English Department
We are a collaborative and motivated team who have a passion for teaching and seeing our students achieve their potential.
The English classrooms are based together and each room is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and visualiser. We have a shared resource area where all books and stationary are kept and this is within easy reach of the main classrooms. We have an excellent Library and Resource Centre, running the Accelerated Reader programme, and everyone in the department works closely with our librarian. We also have access to a number of computer rooms and have a set of Chrome-Books which can be used with students for learning activities.
Students are taught in mixed ability groups in year 7 with support offered to the weaker students. From year 8, students are streamed into ability classes. We offer a varied and stimulating curriculum which aims to allow students to develop into creative and critical thinkers with an excellent command of both the written and spoken word.
GCSE classes are taught in ability groups and we study the AQA syllabus at Key Stage 4. All of our students study both Language and Literature.
We are committed to offering our students an engaging and enriching curriculum both inside and outside the classroom. We regularly have visiting authors and poets in school and students have the opportunity to go on trips to the theatre and other relevant places of interest. The Librarian runs a number of successful book clubs and we offer extensive opportunities for students to build on their English skills outside the classroom.
Employee Benefits:
Bourne Community College is a highly rewarding environment in which to work. We provide a number of internal and external CPD opportunities for staff and actively encourage pedagogical research and innovation. The staff body is supportive and knowledgeable and we have a Staff Association Committee who organise a number of initiatives for colleagues. Staff also benefit from our links with local businesses, for example discounted membership at our neighbouring leisure centre. This post will offer the successful candidate leadership experience at different levels and the support and experience to further a successful career in Education.

‘’A GOOD SCHOOL’’ (June 2016)
Teacher of Mathematics
We are looking to appoint a Mathematics specialist with a vision and passion for the subject. The teacher would join a dynamic team of teachers who work together closely to provide a challenging and dynamic curriculum.
We recognise that we have fundamental role to play in preparing all our students for their future. We want our students to be numerate in a way that reflects their potential, to leave school free to pursue the subjects they wish to study. All our students will be prepared and entered for GCSE Maths. Some will be prepared for entry level qualifications in addition to that. To stretch the more able, or those who are called to further mathematical study (STEM), we offer some students the further qualifications of Statistics GCSE and the FSMQ OCR Additional Maths level 3 qualifications. Ofsted has recognised that, “pupil progress in maths is a strength of the school.”
Our curriculum is divided into KS3 for year 7 and 8 with KS4 starting in year 9. We encourage the students to make time and space at home for study with regular homework and teach them how to revise specifically. Support clubs, homework tutor intervention and revision classes are provided to support students who need it. Our curriculum follows a spiral model with areas of maths being mapped out to encourage students to make links between various areas of maths. Teachers in maths routinely challenge the more able and demand they think more deeply (Ofsted 2016).
Teachers are constantly looking for practical ways to teach some aspects of the curriculum, using the outdoor space when appropriate. The department supports the school’s wider projects, getting involved in STEAM projects, or providing support for cross curricular maths for example.
Bourne Community College is a growing and unique 11-16 mixed comprehensive Trust school, valued and supported by the local community. We have been awarded the Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Award ‘Gold’, which very few secondary schools hold in the country.
We have high expectations for our students and of our staff and we aim to provide the highest quality education in an atmosphere of mutual respect where everyone is valued. We are a fully inclusive school where each individual is supported to develop and nurture the values, skills and attributes that enable them to become the very best that they can, regardless of their individual needs.
You will be able to demonstrate our key foci:-
- ASPIRATION – you will be passionate about teaching and excited by learning, with high aspiration for yourself and all students.
- INNOVATION – you will have the capacity to deliver engaging and challenging lessons that make effective use of meta-cognition and data tracking to enable students to make high levels of progress.
- MOTIVATION – you will have excellent subject knowledge and the ability to communicate this effectively using a range of strategies to motivate and support student progress.
What you can expect in return:-
- A commitment to the on-going development of the subject and its role in helping the school achieve its aims.
- An established, dynamic and supportive staff team committed to ensuring a productive and successful place to work.
- A culture of high expectation and challenge as we consistently seek to develop and extend our practice
- A commitment to developing reflective practitioners through our Continued Professional Development programme.
This post would suit a newly qualified teacher who has the potential and desire to be an outstanding teacher. The ability or desire to teach another subject, particularly ICT or computing would be an advantage. This is a fixed term contract for one year, required for September 2021.
