‘There is an excellent range of outdoor activities available, enabling students to develop a wide range of skills. The very good work in PE and outdoor education and the sporting opportunities provided also contribute to students' healthy lifestyles ..."   Ofsted

Physical Education is a compulsory part of the National Curriculum for all schools. Although compulsory it is popular with all age groups and at all social levels.

Physical Education at Bourne Community College helps the students to develop and understand their physical capabilities, gain a sense of achievement and responsibility in an enjoyable environment where they have the opportunity to adopt a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle.

It is hoped that we can encourage the students to maintain a high level of participation during their time at College and after leaving.

Success and progress are monitored  against set National criteria. Students are made aware of this criteria and targets are set three times a year.

There is an expectation for students to reach National Curriculum Level 5 or 6 by the end of Year 9.

Students have the opportunity to observe, evaluate and reflect on performance.

All activities are taught by well qualified, experienced, specialist staff who ensure the students develop an awareness of safety, rules, codes of conduct and the enjoyment of participation.

WHY PE?

- As a Safety Value!

As a way of getting rid of excess energy in a controlled, acceptable manner.

- For Aesthetic Reasons!

Where good styles and techniques are recognised and experienced through the physical movements involved.

- For Health and Fitness!

To gain, maintain and improve fitness.

- As a Challenge!

To try and improve skills, tactics and performance. To work with others as part of a team. To learn new activities.

- For Enjoyment!

For the fun of taking part at one’s own level of ability.

- For Excitement!

In Outdoor Pursuits where they maybe a sense of danger and the pressure of competitive situations.

- For Company!

Taking part in physical activities enables people to meet and make friends with others who have similar interests.

‘There are very good curricular and extra-curricular opportunities’ -Ofsted

Participation leads to Enjoyment :- Clubs

- To Practice, Train and Improve!

All levels of ability are welcome to the many clubs which are run by PE staff after College.

Performance leads to Achievement :- Teams/Fixtures/Competitions

Many fixtures are arranged throughout the year with local schools, in a variety of activities. The College competes in County Cup competitions and in all area tournaments. Other events include area athletic championships, badminton tournaments, an annual dance competition and an Evening of Dance.

Dedication leads to Excellence

Good players are recommended for area team consideration and the Bourne Community College PE Department has established links with local sports clubs, such as the Bourne Leisure Centre, in order to encourage further participation.

Off-site Activities

‘There are excellent opportunities for outdoor and adventurous activities’ -Ofsted

In Year 7 students have the opportunity for a residential experience in London combining cross-curricular skills.

In Year 8 students can attend a residential week at Cobnor Activities Centre to receive instruction on canoeing, kayaking, climbing, archery, orienteering, abseiling, low-ropes course and initiative tests.

In Year 10 students can choose to follow a Key Stage 4 course in Outdoor Education.

THE CHANCE FOR QUALIFICATIONS GCSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

‘Standards in GCSE PE are well above average’ - Ofsted

This is a popular and highly successful examination course which the students may choose to follow at the end of Year 9.

The students study the OCR EXAMINATION BOARD syllabus.

Marks are gained for continuous practical assessment (50%),

written theory paper (40%), and a written analysis of performance coursework (10%).  The practical and coursework marks are moderated by an external examiner.

Students will enter for one of the two practical courses.

Course 1:  Physical Education

Students will be assessed on 4 activities they select from at least 2 of the following areas: Games, athletics, outdoor education, dance and exercise activities. Students may also offer activities done out of school such as swimming or horse-riding which require video evidence of performance.

Course 2:  Physical Education (Games)

Students will be assessed on 4 games they select from at least two of the following categories of games:  Invasion, Net/Wall and Striking/fielding.

The qualification gained carries as much standing as any other subject and is particularly useful if students intend to follow one of the many Physical Education courses offered at local 16-19 colleges.

GCSE PERFORMING ARTS - DANCE

Jill Street is responsible for all Bourne Community College performances, incorporating dance, drama and music.

The aim of this course is to develop the candidate’s knowledge, understanding and skills of dance through  performance, composition and appreciation of each candidate's own works and those of others.

The course consists of a mixture of practical and theory lessons.  During the practical lessons, students develop a range of dance movements and experiment with varying choreographic techniques, giving them the knowledge to create their own dances, solo, duo and group compositions, for assessment.

Theory lessons involve discussion of the history of dance, watching dance performances, both live and video, students are assessed project work culminating in a written dance exam.  Students are currently assessed on Performance (20%), Set Study (20%), Composition (30%), programme notes (10%) and a written paper (20%).

There will be changes to the curriculum starting in September 2009. Current examinations are being reviewed by QCA for 2009. For more information, contact the Academic Board websites. Dance: www.aqa.org.uk PE: www.ocr.org.uk
