The
English Department at Bourne Community College is highly regarded
both on a county and national level. The recent Ofsted reported
that, “progress made by students in English is exceptionally and
consistently high, and in 2005 was amongst the best in the
country”.
The
English department also featured in the Government White Paper for
Education in 2006.
We are
joint partners with Modern Foreign Languages in Bourne’s quest to
gain Specialist School recognition.
Our aim
is to recognise every student as an individual and seek to diagnose
and meet reading, writing and oracy needs accordingly. We believe
that competent literacy skills empower our students for the rest of
their lives. Public examinations define the goal posts, but the
journey towards these goals is made as varied and enjoyable as
possible.
Key
Stage 3 Curriculum
All students will follow the same units of study although this may
be at different times in the year. However, the beginning of every
academic year is defined by a specifically selected task which is
designed to diagnose areas of strengths and weaknesses in both
reading and writing. These will subsequently be followed up by
teaching methods and resources aimed to ‘plug the gaps’ in terms of
knowledge and practice. In this way we seek to provide a safety net
for all students, whatever their ability.
