Outdoor Education

Course Title: Outdoor and Adventutous Activities (OAA)

This non GCSE option is designed for students who wish to follow an alternative physical education programme whilst extending their personal, social and organisational development. The programme will lead to a number of national governing body awards eg Royal Yachting Association, British Canoe Union and British Mountaineering Council

What will I learn?

The course will be divided into modules of outdoor and adventurous activities, health safety and injury, expedition experience, leading outdoor and adventurous activities, preparation for sport, the body in sport.

This course will provide experiences and in-depth knowledge of:

outdoor adventure experiences, camp craft, expedition, navigation, climbing, kayaking, sailing, industry standard safety procedures, complete risk assessments and safety procedures. 

One lesson per week will be devoted to classroom based activities; the double lesson will be practical. A First Aid qualification will form an essential part of the course.

How will my learning be assessed?

In order to achieve national awards all students will keep a logbook and demonstrate their skills and competence through practical testing. The course is assessed through assignment research projects and practical experiences. There is no final examination.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

What is the Award?

The award is a challenging programme of activities which will help you to learn new skills, help others adn experience adventure and it will give you a great sense of achievement. What's more, many organisations such as employers and universities take a good view of the Award and what it says about the person who achieved it.

What does it involve?

There are three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold - and, for eeach, yhou complete activities in four sections - service, skills, Physical REcreation and Expeditions. At the Gold level you also take part in a Residential Project.

Who is it for?

Year 9 and above.

Plan, prepare for and undertake a 3 day, 2 night venture

People who do not have the Bronze Award must undertake a further 6 months in either the Service or the longer of the Skills or Physical Recreation Sections.

Undertake a shared activity in a residential setting away from home for 5 days and 4 nights
