Inclusion

The inclusion department at Bourne Community college provides support across the curriculum for students with a range of learning, sensory, physical, emotional and behavioural needs. The abilities and achievements of all students are valued and we are committed to providing a flexible and creative response to individual needs, thus empowering students to achieve in a variety of contexts. All students with Special Educational Needs follow a broad and balanced curriculum, differentiated and modified in pace, content and delivery in a normal classroom where there are always high expectations. Support from our Inclusion Centre emanates across the school to over-arch and support the work of all departments.

Support

We offer highly structured, targeted interventions delivered by teachers or inclusion assistants in small groups or in individual sessions. Withdrawal is tailored to individual needs and progress is closely tracked. We work with local organisations and Chichester College to provide individual personalised pathways for our most needy students in Years 10 and 11.

We operate an open-door policy. Our non-teaching Year Managers are available to answer queries and help with problems on a daily basis and some students have a home-school book to ensure weekly home-school links are maintained.

Resources

Our large, airy, purpose built Inclusion Centre provides a nurturing environment, committed to developing and maintaining a caring community, where diversity is celebrated. The design of our new centre reflects the breadth of our provision and the flexibility that is needed to meet the needs of all our students. State of the art technology is available through SAM learning, My Maths, specialist software, interactive whiteboards, laptops and notebooks. The richness of this provision serves to further personalise learning and support virtual learning in any context.

Recent success achieved by students with Inclusion Needs

Diana Award achieved by our School Council for their outstanding contribution to school life. 10 Young Interpreters trained to be buddies for students with English as an additional language. Jasmine Betsworth was presented with a cup for the student who made the most progress in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Staff

The Inclusion Team, led by Mrs Bosley, our Inclusion Co-ordinator, are a highly skilled, dedicated team of 17 staff who minimize the barriers to learning and promote independent learning. Our large team have a wide range of skills and expertise and we work closely with parents/ carers and local volunteers, as well as commissioning a wide range of specialist outside agencies to provide a co-ordinated response, which ensures that early and appropriate intervention is in place to support individual needs.
